Sync Your Private ‘Locked Folder’ Photos Across Devices with Google Photos!

Google Photos has unveiled a significant update, announcing that it will now synchronize private photos stored in the Locked Folder across multiple devices through cloud backup. This feature, initially introduced in May 2021, has permitted Android users to securely store private photos in a passcode-protected enclave, ensuring that these images remain hidden from prying eyes when accessing the Photos app or displaying photos on a connected TV.

Previously, these locked photos were confined to a single device, typically the user’s Android phone. However, they will now be included in cloud backup, enabling users to access their private and personal photos from any device in their possession. Furthermore, this update allows users to create a Locked Folder for the first time on iOS devices and the web, expanding its availability beyond Android.

For added control, users have the option to enable or disable backup for the Locked Folder, ensuring that its contents remain exclusive to a single device if desired.

It’s important to note that the fundamental functionality of the Locked Folder remains unchanged. Photos and videos stored within this folder will not appear in grids, Memories, albums, or search results within Google Photos.

This update comes on the heels of another recent addition to Google Photos: the Memories feature, enriched by AI capabilities. However, users are still eagerly anticipating the promised AI-powered Magic Editor, which was announced earlier this year at Google’s developer conference.

In addition to the Locked Folder enhancement, Google has revamped the Settings page within the app. The new layout is designed for improved navigation, facilitating access to various sections related to privacy, backup, sharing, and notifications.

The new settings page is currently available on both iOS and Android, while the Locked Folder changes are set to roll out starting today.
