Google has decided to discontinue its Pixel Pass subscription service, which combined a Pixel phone with premium offerings such as YouTube Premium, Google Play Pass, and YouTube Premium, all for a monthly fee.
The announcement came via the company’s support page and was initially reported by 9 to 5 Google. According to the statement, Google will no longer be accepting new purchases or renewals for the Pixel Pass. The company’s rationale for discontinuation was quite general and lacked detailed explanation.
The statement read, “We are dedicated to providing the best value for our hardware products and allowing users the flexibility to purchase their preferred services. We continuously assess our offerings based on customer feedback and strive to provide various avenues for users to access the finest of Google.”
The Pixel Pass service was introduced in 2021 alongside the launch of the Pixel 6 series. Initially priced at $45 per month for the Pixel 6 and $55 per month for the Pixel 6 Pro, subscribers were granted access to features like 200 GB storage through Google One, Google Play Pass for premium apps and games, and YouTube Premium.
Existing subscribers will be able to continue utilizing their Pixel Pass for a duration of two years from the date of their subscription. Following that period, they have the option to upgrade their Pixel device and receive a $100 discount, as outlined in the support page. Upon the conclusion of the Pixel Pass subscription term, Google’s service subscriptions will automatically renew at a discounted rate; however, no specifics regarding the total bundle cost were provided.
It is important to note that the Pixel 7a and the Pixel Fold were not offered through the Pixel Pass program. Additionally, the subscription service remained exclusive to the United States and was not expanded to other regions.
