Google is killing Gmail’s basic HTML view in 2024

Once again, a Google product is facing discontinuation as Gmail’s basic HTML view is set to retire in January 2024. This minimalist option allowed users to access their emails in a simplified format.

Google has updated its support page to inform users that after the specified date, Gmail will automatically switch to the Standard view. Some users on Hacker News have reported receiving emails from Google announcing the end of this feature.

The email from Google reads, “We are notifying you that, beginning in early January 2024, the Gmail Basic HTML view for desktop and mobile web will be deactivated. These HTML views are older versions of Gmail, replaced by their modern counterparts over a decade ago, and lack the full functionality of current Gmail.”

Currently, attempting to access the HTML version prompts a message from Google, stating that it is designed for “slower connections and legacy browsers” and asks users to confirm if they wish to continue using the standard version.

The HTML version lacks many features, including chat, spell check, search filters, keyboard shortcuts, and advanced formatting. However, it remains valuable in situations with poor connectivity or for users who prefer a no-frills email experience. It remains uncertain whether Google intends to introduce a mode specifically for low connectivity.

Google’s current focus is on integrating AI-powered features into its products, including Gmail. Recently, the company launched the Duet AI feature to assist users in composing emails. Additionally, it allowed the Bard chatbot to integrate with Google accounts last week, enabling users to inquire about their email history.
