Bing’s new ‘Deep Search’ feature offers more comprehensive answers to complex search queries

Microsoft Bing is set to introduce a novel “Deep Search” feature leveraging OpenAI’s GPT-4, aimed at providing users with more pertinent and exhaustive responses to intricate search inquiries. This augmentation does not replace Bing’s existing web search but rather enriches it, enabling a more profound exploration of the web.

In a blog post, Microsoft elucidates that this innovative feature builds upon Bing’s current web index and ranking system, integrating GPT-4 to transform search queries into more comprehensive descriptions of desired results.

For example, if a user seeks information on loyalty programs in Japan and inputs the query, “how do points systems work in Japan,” Deep Search would expand the query to include details such as explanations of various loyalty card programs in Japan, encompassing benefits, requirements, and limitations. It would also provide examples of popular loyalty cards from diverse categories, compare the advantages and disadvantages of loyalty cards versus other payment methods in Japan, and highlight notable services and participating merchants. This expanded description enhances the user’s ability to convey intent compared to a brief query.

In cases of ambiguous queries, Deep Search identifies all potential intents, creating comprehensive descriptions for each. Users are then presented with these intents to choose the most relevant one.

After generating the expanded description, Bing retrieves relevant results that may not appear in standard search results. Deep Search locates pages matching the expanded query, even rewriting and searching for variations. For instance, in response to the loyalty points query, it might explore variations like “loyalty card programs Japan,” “best loyalty cards for travelers in Japan,” or “managing loyalty points with phone apps.”

Microsoft emphasizes that Deep Search is an optional feature, taking up to 30 seconds to complete. It is not intended for every query or user. For those who prefer instant results without comprehensive details, regular Bing search results are readily available.
