Mark Zuckerberg announced today that Meta is currently testing a feature designed to display Threads posts on Mastodon and other networks that support the ActivityPub protocol.
Zuckerberg expressed optimism about the potential for interoperability, stating that it would offer users more options for interaction and broaden content reach. However, he did not delve into the specifics of how the integration would function.
Following the announcement, users reported the ability to follow Instagram head Adam Mosseri via various Mastodon clients, though his posts were not visible. Users on Mastodon could also search for Mosseri’s Threads profile using “@mosseri@threads.net,” potentially indicating future accessibility to other Threads profiles.
The roadmap for Threads’ ActivityPub integration remains unclear regarding cross-posting capabilities between Mastodon (or other ActivityPub-supported networks) and Threads, or data migration.
During Threads’ launch in July, Mosseri noted the absence of integration with the fediverse at the launch but affirmed Meta’s commitment to incorporating support for ActivityPub into the app. In August, Threads introduced a feature allowing users to verify their Mastodon profiles through “rel=me” links, establishing connections between accounts.
Zuckerberg’s recent announcement signifies Meta’s intention to integrate Threads into the decentralized social network system, marking a significant step in that direction.
