TikTok rolls out an enhanced app experience for tablets and foldables

TikTok unveiled a recent update aimed at elevating the viewing experience for users on tablets and foldable devices, as announced on Monday. The company emphasized that the app has undergone significant optimization for larger screens, offering viewers a crisp video feed, streamlined navigation bars, and support for both landscape and portrait orientations.

In this latest enhancement, TikTok users will encounter a refined video feed that presents content with enhanced clarity. Notably, navigation bars are now situated at the top and bottom of the screen, facilitating easy access to the app’s features and tabs.

Furthermore, the app seamlessly adapts to either landscape or portrait orientation, a noteworthy addition considering TikTok’s previous global testing of a horizontal full-screen mode on mobile devices. By introducing a landscape mode tailored for larger devices, TikTok is expanding its footprint into the realm of YouTube, especially with its ongoing support for longer video content. Given TikTok’s established commitment to long-form content, this update aims to improve the viewing experience for users engaging in activities such as watching cooking demonstrations and beauty tutorials on their tablets. The company anticipates that this new mode will attract users who typically consume content on YouTube via their tablets, encouraging them to explore TikTok instead.

In a blog post, the company stated, “While most people already know and love TikTok on their mobile devices, we know many also like to access it on larger screens and foldable devices.” This move towards optimizing for tablets and foldable gadgets aligns with TikTok’s strategy to cater to diverse user preferences and usage scenarios.

It’s noteworthy that TikTok’s proactive optimization for foldables and tablets stands in contrast to Instagram, one of its primary competitors, which currently lacks an iPad app. By advancing the app experience on larger devices, TikTok is positioning itself beyond its traditional mobile-first approach, seizing an opportunity to outpace competitors who are still catching up in this domain.
