Elon Musk Set to Touch Down in India, Eager to Meet PM Modi: Confirms Visit

Elon Musk Confirms India Visit, Anticipates Meeting with PM Modi

American Entrepreneur Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc., asserts his forthcoming visit to India to engage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a recent post on X, Musk expressed his anticipation, stating, “Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister @NarendraModi in India.”

Scheduled Arrival and Purpose

Sources close to the matter revealed that Musk is slated to touch down in India during the week of April 22. Speculations suggest that he will unveil Tesla’s investment strategies for the Indian market during his visit.

Past Engagements and Forward Outlook

Musk’s upcoming visit echoes his prior interactions with Prime Minister Modi. Notably, in June last year, the two figures convened during Modi’s visit to the United States. At that juncture, Musk articulated his intentions to journey to India in 2024, expressing optimism regarding Tesla’s imminent entry into the Indian automotive landscape.

Policy Implications: India’s Electric Vehicle Thrust

The timing of Musk’s visit aligns with India’s recent announcement of an ambitious electric vehicle (EV) policy.

The policy extends import duty concessions to companies establishing manufacturing units within the nation, provided they invest a minimum of $500 million. This strategic move aims to allure major global players like Tesla into India’s burgeoning EV market.

Import Duty Dynamics

Presently, cars imported as completely built units (CBUs) attract substantial customs duties, ranging from 70% to 100%, contingent on various factors such as engine size and cost.

The new policy seeks to lower these duties, facilitating a conducive environment for EV manufacturing and promoting India as a premier destination for such endeavors.

Tesla’s Prior Advocacy and Current Stand

Tesla’s interest in the Indian market dates back several years. In 2022, Musk advocated for reduced import duties to enable the sale of Tesla vehicles in India. However,

the company insisted on the prerogative to first sell and service its cars within the country before contemplating local manufacturing. Musk underscored this point in August 2021, highlighting the necessity of overcoming import duty hurdles to pave the way for local production.

Prospects for Local Manufacturing

Despite past challenges, Musk hinted at the potential establishment of a Tesla manufacturing unit in India, contingent upon the success of its imported vehicles

in the market. However, he reiterated concerns over the exorbitant import duties, labeling them as the highest in the world for any major country.

Conclusion

Elon Musk’s impending visit to India holds significant promise for the country’s electric vehicle sector. Amidst policy reforms and Tesla’s strategic maneuvers,

the stage is set for a transformative journey towards sustainable mobility solutions in the Indian automotive landscape.
