Anil Goel, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Byju’s, is stepping down from the edtech giant amid a larger restructuring at the Bengaluru-based startup aimed at streamlining costs and consolidating its various businesses. Jiny Thattil is set to take over as the new CTO, as per an internal announcement.
As a former executive at Amazon, Goel was known to be one of the most highly compensated CTOs in the country, sources familiar with the situation revealed. It was mutually agreed between Goel and Byju’s to part ways, according to an individual acquainted with the matter.
Goel’s departure is part of Byju’s ongoing efforts to achieve financial stability by aiming for break-even in the coming year. The startup has undergone substantial workforce reductions in recent quarters and merged certain business segments. Additionally, Byju’s saw the departure of its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in recent times.
Thattil, who joined Byju’s in 2020 and initially led the engineering division before assuming a senior role at Epic, a company acquired by Byju’s earlier, brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at Amazon, InMobi, and Happay.
Arjun Mohan, the CEO of Byju’s India operations, commented on Thattil’s appointment, stating, “Thattil’s extensive experience and adept leadership skills position him ideally for this pivotal role as we continue to restructure for improved efficiency and sustainability.”
Mohan further expressed appreciation for Anil Goel’s contributions as the outgoing CTO, acknowledging his outstanding work and commitment to driving technological innovation at Byju’s.
