Cultivated Biosciences Set to Launch Plant-Based Cream in 2025

Cultivated Biosciences Revolutionizes Plant-Based Cream Market

In the ever-evolving landscape of food technology, Cultivated Biosciences, a Swiss biotech startup, unveils its breakthrough yeast cream, poised to disrupt the dairy industry. Addressing the perennial challenge of replicating animal-based products,

the company’s innovative approach heralds a new era in plant-based alternatives.Dairy, renowned for its creamy texture, presents a formidable hurdle for companies venturing into the realm of plant-based substitutes.

However, Cultivated Biosciences claims to have conquered this obstacle with its pioneering yeast cream. Derived from a specific strain of oleaginous yeast, the product promises to mimic the texture and mouthfeel of traditional cream, without compromising on taste or quality.

The company’s journey began in 2022 with a pre-seed round, raising $1.5 million to fuel its research and development efforts. Initial success came in the form of a fat-rich ingredient boasting the texture and stability required for dairy-free products.

Eschewing additives, Cultivated Biosciences prioritized taste and nutritional value, setting a new standard in plant-based innovation.Central to the company’s technology is yeast biomass fermentation, a process distinct from precision fermentation.

Leveraging the high-protein content and rapid growth of microorganisms, Cultivated Biosciences harnesses nature’s potential to create protein-rich foods. Lucie Rein, the company’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasizes the non-GMO nature of this approach, highlighting its scalability and sustainability.

Explaining the composition of the yeast cream, Rein elucidates its blend of fats, proteins, and fibers—all derived from yeast. The microstructure of yeast lipid droplets mirrors that of milk fat, ensuring an authentic sensory experience for consumers. Cultivated Biosciences envisions its product integrated into various consumer goods, ranging from coffee creamers to milk and ice cream.

The company’s pivotal moment arrived in December, marked by the public debut of its proof-of-concept coffee creamer. Rein emphasizes the complexity of achieving stability in coffee, given its high temperature and acidity.

Cultivated Biosciences’ triumph lies in delivering a creamer that maintains its creamy consistency, taste, and color, setting a new benchmark in plant-based beverage enhancements.Buoyed by this success, Cultivated Biosciences embarked on a journey of scaling up its production capabilities.

From a modest output of 5 to 10 liters in 2022, the company now boasts a capacity of 1,500 liters, with the potential to reach 80,000 liters through strategic partnerships. This exponential growth reflects the burgeoning demand for innovative dairy alternatives.

Cultivated Biosciences’ ascent parallels a broader trend within the food tech landscape, with dairy alternatives attracting considerable attention from investors. In January, Perfect Day secured a substantial pre-Series E financing round, signaling investor confidence in precision fermentation techniques.

Other players, such as Better Dairy and New Culture, are also leveraging this approach to craft milk proteins with unprecedented precision. Not to be outdone, Cultivated Biosciences recently secured an additional $5 million in funding, underscoring investor enthusiasm for its groundbreaking yeast cream.

Led by Navus Ventures, the investment round drew support from prominent names in the venture capital arena, including Founderful, HackCapital, and Lukas Böni, founder of Planted. New investors, including Joyful VC, Mandi Ventures, and Zürcher Kantonalbank, further bolstered the company’s financial standing.

With eyes set on commercialization, Cultivated Biosciences is in talks with key food service companies, aiming to debut its product in the United States by 2025, pending FDA approval. Rein emphasizes the importance of securing endorsements from industry giants, signaling the company’s readiness to disrupt the market.

As Cultivated Biosciences prepares to revolutionize the plant-based cream market, its journey epitomizes the spirit of innovation and resilience driving the food tech industry forward. With a commitment to sustainability and consumer satisfaction, the company stands poised to redefine the future of dairy alternatives on a global scale.
