Deadmau5-founded startup Korus taps into AI for music creation

Today, Pixelynx, a metaverse company owned by Animoca Brands and co-founded by DJ and producer Deadmau5, unveiled its latest set of tools for its flagship product, Korus. Korus is an AI-powered music creation platform that enables users to remix content using AI and licensed stem files from artists and music labels, ultimately allowing them to mint music and earn revenue.

The new features introduced by Korus include interactive visuals, a layering tool, video recording, a playlist feature, and a rewards program to encourage artistic contributions. One of Korus’ key proprietary tools is “Sound Mosaic,” a music composition algorithm that creates music based on uploaded stem files. Artists are compensated for their contributions, retaining ownership of new content using their stems, and users share royalties with the original IP holders. The Sound Mosaic tool will soon be available as an SDK for developers to integrate into their products.

Artists on the platform are developing their own AI models based on their intellectual property to monetize and engage with fans. For instance, Deadmau5 introduced his AI model, “Mau5trap DNA,” in June, generating significant revenue within 24 hours.

Pixelynx is still refining its business model but has taken an equity stake in Reveal, an unchained royalty-splitting platform, to provide transparent royalty information to artists and creators.

Korus also features AI companions, known as “KORS,” which are trainable robots that generate new music and album images based on user preferences. These companions, designed in collaboration with Mau5trap, Beatport, and Pioneer DJ, include both free and paid versions with exclusive content from emerging and top artists.

New platform features include “Scenz,” a video tool for crafting visually appealing visuals, and “Layer Mosaic,” allowing users to modify stems, adjust musical elements, and generate new sounds through AI text prompts. Korus introduces a soft currency called “NOIZ” for purchasing audio and visual content, music downloads, and other rewards. The platform aims to foster a community of creators through a playlist feature, enabling users to curate and explore collections of content.

In addition to these tools, Pixelynx revealed a partnership with Netflix’s “Black Mirror” to launch its own web3 experience, aiming to combine music, film, and TV with core technology to bring fans closer to their favorite IP and worlds. Pixelynx, founded by musicians Richie Hawtin, Deadmau5, and industry veterans Ben Turner and Dean Wilson, has seen over 15,000 songs created and minted on-chain by Korus users since its May launch.
