GitHub teases Copilot enterprise plan that lets companies customize for their codebase

GitHub has just announced its plans for a new enterprise subscription tier, allowing companies to customize its Copilot pair-programmer according to their internal codebase. This was part of the highlights shared at the GitHub Universe developer conference. The Copilot Chat, a chatbot integrated into the developer’s IDE, will soon be available in general from December. Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4, Copilot Chat helps developers by providing suggestions, identifying bugs, and offering feedback on code.

GitHub is also introducing a Copilot Enterprise subscription, priced at $39/month and set to launch in February 2024. This enterprise-grade subscription will include features from the existing business plan along with the ability for companies to personalize Copilot Chat and fine-tune the underlying models. It aims to enhance collaboration and efficiency by connecting Copilot to a company’s codebase, offering suggestions on private code, and extending the functionality to GitHub.com.

GitHub has collaborated with companies like AMD during testing, allowing fine-tuning of Copilot for specific applications, such as hardware design languages. Additionally, GitHub is expanding Copilot Chat to the GitHub mobile app and adding support for JetBrains’ IDEs based on user demand.

The Copilot Partner Program is another significant announcement, fostering relationships with third-party developer tooling companies to build integrations for Copilot. GitHub is also introducing Copilot Workspace, expected to arrive in 2024, acting as a natural language bridge for developers to transition from idea to running code seamlessly.

In terms of security, GitHub is enhancing features introduced in 2020, adding new AI capabilities for code-scanning, including an “autofix” feature for quicker vulnerability fixes. This includes CodeQL, JavaScript, and TypeScript alerts, providing actionable suggestions that developers can commit with a click or edit before merging into the codebase.
