Google to Restore Delisted Apps Amid Payment Policy Dispute

Tech giant Google has announced its decision to temporarily restore apps previously removed from its Google Play Store due to payment policy violations. This move comes amidst ongoing disputes over Google’s imposition of fees on in-app payments.

A spokesperson for Google stated, “In the spirit of cooperation, we are temporarily reinstating the apps of developers with pending appeals in the Supreme Court. However, we maintain our right to implement and enforce our business model as established in various courts.”

While the apps are being restored, Google plans to invoice the full applicable service fees and extend payment timelines for the affected companies. The spokesperson emphasized the importance of finding collaborative solutions that respect the needs of all parties involved.

This development follows Google’s removal of several Indian apps, including Shaadi.com, Matrimony.com, Bharat Matrimony, naukri.com, 99acres.com, and shiksha.com from the Play Store. In February, the Supreme Court declined to intervene or grant interim relief to these companies.

Google addressed the ongoing conflict in a blog post, highlighting that “for an extended period, 10 companies, including well-established ones, have chosen not to pay for the immense value they receive on Google Play.” The company emphasized its commitment to enforcing policies consistently across the ecosystem.

The conflict revolves around Google’s imposition of fees ranging from 15% to 30% on in-app payments. This issue arose after the Competition Commission of India ordered the discontinuation of the system, sparking tension between Google and app developers.
