A recent report by intelligence firm Morning Consult, commissioned by IBM, highlights the rapid growth of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) within Indian enterprises. Approximately 59% of Indian businesses are actively leveraging AI for various organizational purposes, placing the nation among the top in global AI adoption. The report, titled ‘AI Adoption Index 2023,’ underscores that nearly six out of ten IT professionals at these enterprises are engaged in implementing generative AI.
Moreover, a substantial 74% of these professionals have ramped up investments or rollouts of AI technologies over the past two years, focusing on areas such as research and development, workforce development, and custom AI solutions. The findings are based on a survey encompassing over 8,500 technology employees across several countries, including India, Australia, Canada, and France.
Driving this surge in AI adoption are user-friendly AI tools and the imperative to streamline operations and reduce costs through automation. Enterprises are turning to AI to mitigate labor shortages and address skill gaps by automating tasks, enhancing customer service, and refining recruitment processes. Nearly half of the surveyed companies are currently engaged in training or reskilling their workforce to integrate seamlessly with AI technologies.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding AI adoption, the report identifies ethics and limited skill sets as significant barriers hindering further progress. Approximately 30% of respondents cite a lack of AI expertise, while 27% express concerns over the complexity of AI integration and scalability.
Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India and South Asia, acknowledges the positive trajectory of AI adoption among Indian enterprises but stresses the need to overcome hesitancy and move towards widespread deployment. Patel emphasizes the untapped potential for businesses to scale AI initiatives beyond experimentation, underscoring the need for concerted efforts to address skill shortages and ethical considerations.
