IIndia Set to Eclipse US as Largest GitHub Developer Community by 2027: Satya Nadella

In a significant projection, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella anticipates India’s emergence as the largest developer community on GitHub, outpacing the US by 2027. Nadella underscores the pivotal role of India’s developer community in spearheading cutting-edge products and solutions.

India is currently witnessing unprecedented growth on GitHub, the Microsoft-owned software collaboration and innovation platform, boasting a formidable user base of 13.2 million developers. Furthermore, India claims the global runner-up position for generative AI projects hosted on GitHub, trailing only behind the US.

Addressing an audience of 1,100 developers and technology leaders at the Microsoft AI Tour in Bengaluru, Nadella accentuates that solutions crafted by Indian developers are tailored to address challenges both domestically and internationally. He lauds the transformative impact of AI on developers worldwide, noting India’s remarkable contributions to AI innovation on a global scale.

Expanding Microsoft’s ‘Code Without Barriers’ initiative to India later this month, Nadella aims to democratize access to tech skills across the nation. This initiative pledges to provide skilling and certification opportunities to 75,000 women developers in India in 2024.

Earlier announcements by Nadella underscore Microsoft’s commitment to empowering India’s tech ecosystem. The ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA program, slated to provide AI skilling opportunities to two million individuals in India by 2025, exemplifies Microsoft’s dedication to fostering talent and innovation.

In January, Microsoft facilitated career advancement for 100,000 developers through its AI Odyssey initiative. Phase 2, scheduled from February 8, 2024, to June 25, 2024, targets an additional 150,000 developers across Asia.

Microsoft’s impact extends across a diverse array of developers, encompassing non-profit organizations, student developers, and large enterprises, catalyzing AI adoption across sectors. The company actively engages with a community of two million professional and student developers spanning 100 cities in India, facilitating skill acquisition and employment opportunities.

At the Microsoft AI Tour in Bengaluru, Sarvam AI, a generative AI startup, announced a collaboration with the tech giant to deploy its Indic voice large language model (LLM) on Azure, further amplifying the reach and accessibility of AI technologies.

As India’s developer community continues to thrive and innovate, Microsoft remains committed to nurturing talent, fostering collaboration, and advancing technological frontiers to drive inclusive growth and innovation across the nation.
