ISRO’s GROUNDBREAKING ECO-FRIENDLY HYDROGEN-OXYGEN POWER FUEL ADVANCEMENT

In a historic achievement, ther (ISRO) Indian space research organisation has accomplished a pioneering feat by showcasing a novel method of power generation in space. This breakthrough involves the utilization of a fuel cell system that harnesses hydrogen and oxygen gases. The momentous experiment unfolded on January 1, 2024, aboard the PSLV-C58 rocket, with the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM3)  serving as the test platform.

The focal point of this groundbreaking experiment was the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell Power System (FCPS), specifically tailored for a 100-watt class. Operating in space, this system impressively generated 180 watts of power by efficiently tapping into the stored hydrogen and oxygen gases, maintained under high pressure within the module.

The PEM fuel cell operates with an environmentally friendly approach, directly converting chemical energy into electricity without involving any combustion process. Notably, the sole byproduct of this process is water vapor, establishing it as a highly efficient and emission-free technology. This characteristic is particularly advantageous for human space missions, addressing the simultaneous needs for electricity, drinking water, and heat within a single system, thereby enhancing the sustainability of space habitats.

Beyond its applications in space, this technology holds significant potential for terrestrial use, particularly in revolutionizing the automotive industry. It provides a greener alternative to traditional engines, offering comparable range and refueling times without emissions. Moreover, the technology finds applicability in standby power systems, marking a noteworthy stride towards cleaner energy solutions.

This successful test marks a significant step towards ISRO’s ambitious objective of establishing a fully operational space station by 2035. The FCPS emerges as a crucial component in potentially powering this space station, providing both electricity and pure drinking water. This aligns seamlessly with ISRO’s overarching vision of advancing space technology while emphasizing sustainable solutions.

In essence, ISRO’s recent achievement in testing the PEM fuel cell in space not only underscores its technical prowess but also stands as a beacon of sustainable and efficient space travel in the future.
