Samsung unveiled its latest Galaxy S24 lineup of smartphones at a launch event today, showcasing an array of innovative features, including the introduction of the Live Translation feature powered by artificial intelligence (AI). This feature enhances the calling experience by enabling users to engage in conversations in languages they do not speak, providing real-time translations both audibly and on the screen.
During the Unpacked event, Samsung demonstrated the Live Translation technology, illustrating how users could seamlessly make a restaurant reservation in a foreign language. The conversation, initiated within the native Call app, was instantly translated after the user spoke, allowing the other person to respond in their language. The response was then translated back into the caller’s language, creating a smooth and effective communication process.
Drew Blackard, Samsung’s VP of Product Management, emphasized the significance of the Live Translation feature, describing it as akin to having a personal interpreter during calls.
The Live Translation feature is set to launch with support for audio and text translations in up to 13 languages. Notably, all translation processes occur on the device, ensuring the privacy of Samsung owners’ phone calls.
In addition to its real-time translation capabilities, the feature conveniently remembers language settings for users and their contacts. This eliminates the need for constant updates before each conversation, making it particularly beneficial for individuals making international calls or frequent travelers.
Samsung is also integrating translation into the Samsung keyboard, allowing users to directly translate words and phrases as they type. The keyboard can detect the language being used, translating messages into the recipient’s language. This feature is not limited to language differences but also caters to those who prefer communicating in their native language even when both parties speak the same language.
Furthermore, users can choose from different communication styles such as “casual” for chatting with friends or a more formal tone for work-related contacts. Additional options include an excited tone, a social tone for social media posts, and even a Shakespearean tone for those feeling whimsical. These keyboard translations, like the live translations during calls, are processed on-device using Google’s highly efficient AI model, Gemini Nano.
