Snapchat+ subscribers can now create and send AI-generated images

On Tuesday, Snapchat announced the rollout of several new AI-powered features exclusively for Snapchat+ subscribers. A standout addition allows subscribers to generate and send AI-created images based on text prompts. Users can access this AI image generator by clicking the “AI” button on the right side of their screen. After selecting or inputting a prompt, such as “a planet made out of cheese” or “a sunny day at the beach,” the app generates the corresponding image, which users can then edit, download, and share.

Already equipped with the ability to create AI images for bitmoji backgrounds and chat wallpapers, Snapchat+ subscribers can now extend this feature to include sharing AI-generated images with friends. The app did not disclose the specific model driving this capability but mentioned having partnerships for foundational models.

The update also introduces the integration of Snapchat’s Dream, a generative AI selfie feature, allowing users to create imaginative self-portraits in various scenarios. With the latest enhancement, subscribers can include a friend in their AI selfie, resulting in creative compositions like both individuals appearing as mermaids. Snapchat+ subscribers receive a complimentary pack of eight Dreams each month.

Furthermore, the subscription service now includes an AI-powered extend tool. This tool enables users to automatically obtain a zoomed-out version of an image, compensating for instances where they may have zoomed in too closely, with AI filling in the background.

Snapchat emphasizes that these features are currently rolling out, with regional availability subject to variation. The updates underscore Snapchat’s commitment to advancing its AI capabilities, building upon existing offerings like AI-generated images from the My AI chatbot and the AI Dream feature.

Snapchat+ was launched in the summer, priced at $3.99 USD per month, and boasts over 7 million subscribers. Recent data indicates robust growth, with the service achieving its highest in-app revenue in November, surpassing $20 million net revenue (after app store fees) for the first time. Subscription revenue also experienced double-digit growth in nearly every country where Snapchat+ is available, signaling continued success and expansion.
