Spotify spotted developing AI-generated playlists created with prompts

After the successful launch of Spotify’s AI-driven DJ feature and the recent addition of AI-translated podcast support, Spotify appears to be exploring another AI-based feature for its app: AI-generated playlists. References found in the app’s code suggest that the company may be working on AI-powered playlists that users can create using prompts.

These discoveries were made by tech veteran and investor Chris Messina, who shared screenshots of the app’s code mentioning “AI playlists” and “playlists based on your prompts.” It is speculated that this feature might be integrated within the Blend genre, where user preferences are combined to create playlists that cater to everyone’s music tastes.

When asked for comment, Spotify declined to confirm its plans regarding AI playlists. A spokesperson stated, “At Spotify, we are constantly iterating and ideating to improve our product offering and offer value to users. But we don’t comment on speculation around possible new features and do not have anything new to share at this time.”

However, Spotify may have already laid the groundwork for AI-generated playlists using prompts with a feature called Niche mixes. This feature allows users to create unique playlists based solely on descriptions, although it was initially not labeled as AI-powered by Spotify and instead relies on the company’s personalization technology and algorithms.

Messina’s findings suggest that the new AI playlists may also be created using prompts, but this feature has not yet been discovered in the public app—only in the code. There are indications in the code that suggest users could invite others to collaborate in creating AI playlists, possibly tying it to the Blend feature.

All the code references were found in the latest build of the Spotify app, indicating that this is an upcoming feature still in development. While not all internally tested features make it to the public release, this development suggests Spotify’s ongoing exploration of AI’s role in music personalization.

Spotify has previously hinted at its continued interest in AI technology beyond the AI DJ feature. The company has a dedicated team working on language models and machine learning techniques for personalization, which includes research into possibilities across large language models, generative voice, and personalization. Additionally, there were reports of Spotify experimenting with a ChatGPT-like chatbot for music requests, though no public launch plans were confirmed at that time.
