Thomvest Ventures Secures $250M Fund for Strategic Investments in Fintech, Cybersecurity and AI

Promotion of Umesh Padval and Nima Wedlake Marks a New Chapter in the Bay Area Venture Capital Firm’s Evolution

San Francisco, CA – January 18, 2024

In a strategic move poised to redefine its trajectory, Thomvest Ventures, the Bay Area venture capital firm founded by Peter Thomson, has announced the closing of a substantial $250 million fund. Simultaneously, the firm has elevated Umesh Padval and Nima Wedlake to the coveted roles of managing directors.

Established approximately 25 years ago by Peter Thomson, whose family commands a majority stake in Thomson Reuters, Thomvest Ventures has consistently demonstrated a profound interest in technology and its transformative impact on society. Don Butler, Thomvest Ventures’ managing director, shared insights into the firm’s journey, recounting Thomson’s foresight in recognizing the pivotal role technology would play in shaping the future.

Having observed the cyclical nature of the venture capital industry over the years, Thomvest Ventures strategically pivoted in 2010, shifting from a generalist approach to specializing in key sectors. Butler emphasized the firm’s focus on industries such as fintech, cybersecurity, and AI, citing the value of specialization in understanding market nuances and staying ahead of the curve.

The newly secured $250 million in capital commitments propels Thomvest Ventures’ total assets under management to an impressive $750 million. With plans to invest in 25 to 30 companies, the fund will allocate check sizes ranging from $5 million to $15 million for early-stage ventures and $7 million to $25 million in later-stage investments.

Butler noted that while Thomson has already made undisclosed investments, the firm anticipates a robust pipeline, with the last two quarters witnessing a surge in promising prospects. Highlighting a strategic shift at the later stage, Butler observed companies focusing on profitability and growth acceleration, signaling a dynamic landscape.

Umesh Padval and Nima Wedlake, now managing directors, will play pivotal roles in steering Thomvest Ventures’ investment strategy. Padval will continue leading investments in cybersecurity, cloud, and AI/data infrastructure, while Wedlake will spearhead investments in real estate technology.

Having raised its previous fund in 2017, Thomvest Ventures boasts a track record of over 75 investments, including noteworthy ventures like Blend Labs, Carta, Cohere, Kabbage, LendingClub, SoFi, and Vungle. The firm’s latest developments underscore its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation and fostering growth in key sectors.
