Iconfactory, known for its popular apps like Wallaroo, Frenzic, and the now-closed Twitterific, has unveiled its latest creation, Ollie’s Arcade. This new iOS app is a nostalgic journey into retro gaming, offering a selection of mini-games reminiscent of classic arcade and handheld titles.
Among the initial offerings is “Ollie Soars,” a game reminiscent of Flappy Bird, where players navigate the world, collecting gems while avoiding obstacles. “Snake” is another familiar title where you aim to devour apples while steering clear of your snake’s own twists and turns. Lastly, there’s “Tranquility Touchdown,” a space exploration adventure where you guide your lander to the surfaces of six unique planets.
The Iconfactory team’s goal was to recapture the enchantment of the classic games they cherished during their youth, citing favorites like “Asteroids,” “Moon Patrol,” “Battlezone,” and handheld classics such as “Mattel Football,” “Simon,” and “Merlin.”
Ollie’s Arcade lets players transform their iPhone or iPad into a portal to a retro gaming era, as per the company’s announcement.
Notably, two of the new games, “Ollie Soars” and “Tranquility Touchdown,” drew inspiration from Easter Eggs hidden within Twitterific, the long-lost Twitter app from Iconfactory. Twitterific fell victim to Elon Musk’s API changes that impacted third-party Twitter clients.
“Ollie Soars,” initially introduced as an Easter egg in Twitterific 5 in 2016, has been revamped for the launch of this new app. Likewise, Tranquility Touchdown received a polish and update for its release. To complete the trio, the team added their unique take on the classic “Snake” game.
Players can enjoy these games on their smartphones or opt for a more immersive experience with a game controller or wireless keyboard, according to the company’s statement.
The best part? All of these mini-games are entirely free of ads and subscriptions. The app itself is a free download, offering “Ollie Soars,” with the option to unlock the other two games through a one-time purchase of $1.99 each.
